Krakow Film Music Festival 2017: 17th – 23rd May

See the musicians behind iconic film scores near Wawel for the tenth time!

The Krakow Film Music Festival is being organised by the Krakow Festival Office and RMF Classic Radio for the tenth time! The events will be held in large concert halls which can hold many thousands of people, such as TAURON Arena and the ICE Congress Center. The festival has hosted Oscar winners Alexandre Desplant and Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, among others, as well as Elliot Goldenthal, Hans Zimmer, Wojciech Kilar and Eric Serra.  At the final concerts, viewers have enjoyed screenings of such hit films as The MatrixGladiator, Star Trek and Raiders of the Lost Ark, with live music.

The 10th Film Music Festival is set to be even more exciting than the previous ones!

Wednesday 17th May will feature Abel Korzeniowski in concert (ICE Congress Center, 8 pm) – one of the best known Polish composers associated with Hollywood, with two Golden Globe nominations. The artist will conduct the Beethoven Academy Orchestra himself.

Thursday 18th May (ICE Congress Center, 7 pm): the first ever screening of“The Never Ending Story” with live music – with the German composer and saxophone player Klaus Doldinger. The film’s leitmotif is the title song “Never Ending Story” by Giorgio Moroder, which was a huge hit for Limahl. The rest of the theme music in the film was written by Klaus Doldinger, who will also be on stage at ICE Kraków as a performer.

Friday 19th May: the star of the day will be Oscar-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-winning artist Giorgio Moroder, in an unusual role. The great musician will take over the DJ consoles at 10pm at the festival dance party, DANCE2CINEMA: Midnight Express Party – not in a concert hall, but at Plac im. Jana Nowaka Jeziorańskiego, the square in front of the old railway station building (in front of Galeria Krakowska).  He will transport festival-goers to the world of dance music and iconic film themes, from such hits as „Top Gun”„Flashdance”, and The Never Ending Story”. The audience will also be able to enjoy well-known pop songs.

At the weekend, on Saturday, 20th May (TAURON Arena Krakow, 6pm) there will be an anniversary Film Music Gala – “All is Film Music”. The stars of the evening will be Oscar winners Howard Shore and Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who will present their award-winning fim music, while music from “The Lord of the Rings” will round off the Film Music Festival’s first decade. You will be able to hear pieces by Trevor Morris, Jeff Russo and Sean Callery, as world premieres from new TV shows.

Sunday 21st May (ICE Congress Center 12:00): on the fortieth anniversary of the premiere of “Star Wars”, young performers will take on John Williams’ immortal music with George Lucas’ space opera. It is worth noting that the orchestral arrangements were written under the eye of John Williams himself.

A spectacular event has been planned for the ending of this anniversary festival on 21st May (TAURON Arena Krakow, 6pm): a screening of James Cameron’s blockbusterTitanic”, with James Horner’s Oscar-winning music performed live. The Sinfonietta Cracovia will be led by the Swiss conductor Ludwig Wicki.

On Monday 22nd May, there will be another novelty and a surprise: an Outdoor Cinema Screening – cinema under the stars at 11, Powiśle Square. At 9:30pm, there will be an outdoor screening of a special feature film, on a large screen under Wawel Castle. This will be a free event with no tickets.

During concert intervals, you will be able to buy CDs of music from the festival, as in previous years. They are wonderful reminders of the experience of the FMF!

The festival is organised by: the City of Krakow, the Krakow Festival Office, and RMF Classic radio.
