The Summer Jazz Festival at Piwnica Pod Baranami is the largest Polish jazz festival, and one of the largest in Europe. Its roots stretch back to 1996, and its director and founder is Witold Wnuk. This event, which takes the form of a series of concerts, is expanding its range by organizing concerts in the Krakow Philharmonic, the Manggha Centre, and the ICE Krakow Congress Centre, among others, and also in Krakow’s jazz clubs. Stars like Michał Urbaniak, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock have performed here. Since 2001, a festival prize has been awarded – the “Jazz Ram” (Jazzowy Baranek) – and the winners have included Wojciech Karolak and Tomasz Stańko.

During the festival, over the course of a month, several dozen concerts will take place!

Guest star concerts:

25.06.2017 ICE Kraków Congress Centre, 8:00pm Ive Mendes – her music combines smooth jazz with Brazilian bossa nova. She is often compared to Sade, and her inspiration comes from her home country of Brazil, and the passion and magic created by a relationship between two people. Her third album “Bossa Romantica”, was released in Poland in 2016.

11.07.2017 Krakow Philharmonic, 8:00pm Branford Marsalis & Kurt Elling – the Branford Marsalis quartet is composed of well-known musicians with strong personalities and well established positions on the jazz scene, and has performed at the Summer Festival several times. This time, they have invited the most acclaimed jazz vocalist of our times – Kurt Elling – to join them!

12.07.2017 Auditorium Maximum, Jagellonian University, 8:00pm Nigel Kennedy is an innovative artist whose repertoire includes not only classical and jazz compositions, but also other genres. He stands out from the crowd with his unconventional style. This time, he will be performing music by Krzysztof Komeda.

Scheduled concerts:

Piwnica Pod Baranami – concerts will be held daily at 9:00pm, featuring Hanna Banaszak, Wojciech Karolak i Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, among others.

Młoda scena alternatywna – Klub Pracownia Pod Baranami, concerts on Tuesdays at 8:00pm, featuring Pola Chobot and Adam Baran as well as Fabryka Zabawek and others.

Harris Piano Jazz Bar – concerts daily at 9:30pm, featuring Leszek Kułakowski Quartet, Michał Kobojek & Magda Bożyk with band, and others.

Additional events:

New Orleans Sunday – 02.07.2017 – a whole-day outdoor event, including concerts in the cafes on the Market Square, and the colourful New Orleans Parade, in which Cracovians, musicians, actors will be taking part, along with some famous faces. The finale will be a concert on the large stage under the Ratusz (old Town Hall) on the Market Square.

Jazz Night – 15.07.2017 – part of the Krakowskie Noce (Cracovian Nights) series. On this special Night, different forms of jazz will be presented, performed by artists from around the world. The concerts will take place in locations chosen individually to suit the musical programme. Entrance is free to all concerts.

The Z. Seiferta Violin Competition Winners’ Concert at Radio Kraków – 18.07.2017 8:00pm Romana Bobrowska Studio – apart from the competition winners, Stephan Brown will perform on the cello, and Mateusz Smoczyński on the violin. Entrance free.
