Summer Jazz Festival at Piwnica pod Baranami (Main Market Square) was organised for the first time in 1996. It is one of the biggest jazz events in Poland, with over 300 musicians attending and some 100 concerts played.
This year the festival will be inaugurated by Nigel Kennedy Band playing the concert entitled `For a friend` dedicated to Jarek Smietana, with whom Kennedy worked for several years. Robert Glasper, the recent Grammy laureate, will perform with his trio at the Manggha Centre on July 12th. The greatest star of the Festival, Herbie Hancock, will perform in ICE Krakow Conference Centre on 21st July. This American musician, an icon of modern jazz music, will perform solo, playing the piano and the keyboards.
The concerts will be played at several venues – from big concert halls to small jazz clubs, and they will be accompanied by a lot of events and exhibitions. This festival is definitely a must for jazz lovers and for all those who value good music in a beautiful surroundings.
